Exploring Japanese Bathing Utensils

LESSON PLAN for teacher

Language: Japanese
Grade Level: High school
General Proficiency Level: 1st-4th year
Duration of Lesson: 2-3 60-minute classes (depending on student access to computers outside of school)
DESCRIPTION
High school students will have the opportunity to explore Japanese bathing utensils and learn how to take a bath in Japan. Working with a partner, they will try to guess how to use certain bathing utensils, and will try to figure out different ways to use a tenugai bath towel. They will then design their own tenugui, invent a use for it, and post to the class wiki pictures of their tenugui with instructions in Japanese about how to use it.

LESSON PLAN OBJECTIVES

  • With a partner, students will look at some Japanese onsen bath utensils (bath bucket, bath stool, bath scoop, tenugui, bath scrubber) and try to guess how each item is used.
  • Students will read a handout and see a video project about going to an onsen and taking a bath. With a partner, they will practice explaining how to bathe at an onsen.
  • Students will look at real tenugui, as well as pictures of tenugui, and try to figure out the meaning of the patterns on the tenugui. They will do a webquest and learn about the history of tenugui, and how they are used today.
  • Students will next create an original tenugui design, drawn on cloth the size of a real tenugui (33cmx90cm).
  • Students will invent a use for their original tenugui, and will post pictures (videos) showing their tenugui, and how to use it.
. They will present their tenugui and brochures to the class, and then display them in a showcase at school to tell others.

ASSESSMENT ELEMENTS

  • Teacher will evaluate students informally (formative assessment) when they practice the bathing routine with a partner, and when they practice saying how to use their tenugui traditional style and contemporary style.
  • Teacher will evaluate students using summative assessment through the webquest project and handout, and through vocabulary quizzes.

II. LESSON PLANS
Lesson 1
Functions
Students will learn the names of some bathroom utensils at an onsen, and learn how to use the volitional form ~おう(Let`s~) when talking about going to an onsen. They will also talk about what they will do at an onsen, using the ~たら form.

Culture
Students will understand how to take a bath at an onsen using the appropriate utensils.

Materials
actual bathing utensils (teoke, senmenki, isu, tenugui)
handout: kanji pre-activity
handout: kanji vocabulary list

Technology and Equipment
TV/DVD player with hookup to computer

Sequence of Activities
1. Teacher introduces vocabulary using Onsen Reading Assignment handout KANJI PRE-ACTIVITY and KANJI VOCABULARY LIST, and shows students actual bath utensils.
2. Students look over the handout and circle any unfamiliar kanji, then try to figure out their meanings with a partner. Students also try to guess how to use the various bath utensils.
3.Students watch the "Let`s Visit an Onsen" video project {VIDEO] and read the sentences aloud. They work with their partner to figure out the meaning of the sentences.
4. Students report back to the class what they have figured out about the kanji in the reading assignment, and the usage of the bath utensils. With a partner, they will practice saying how to take a bath at an onsen, suing ~たらand ~おう forms where appropriate.

5. Teacher will give each pair of students the same reading assignment, cut into strips, with one-two sentences per strip. Students will work with their partners to put the strips into the correct order.
5. The teacher will help students as needed, and provide feedback (formative assessment) on their progress.
6.Students take vocabulary quizlet to check their progress (formative assessment) Tenugui vocabulary quiz
